Michelin Partnership Brings RFID-Enabled Smart Tires to Production
Beontag has teamed with Michelin to bring connected tires to commercial and personal vehicles
A new partnership plans to incorporate smart tag manufacturer Beontag’s new smart tire technology into millions of commercial and passenger Michelin tires over the next two years.
Michelin tires plan to use a UHF embedded tag from Beontag allowing new tires to be tracked throughout their life cycle including manufactured date, storage location, distribution, installation and replacement and refurbishment.
The two companies have been collaborating on the new HF RFID embedded tag since 2019. Following years of development and months of testing, the companies have developed a “reliable connected tire” that could function for up to 621,000 miles including retreading truck tires.
Laurent Couturier, RFID system designer at Michelin said RFID technology in tires plays a pivotal role in optimizing operations and enhancing efficiency.
“This system enables precise, automated tracking of each tire from production to retreading or recycling,” Couturier said. “The RFID tire-tag improves industrial performance while addressing today’s ecological imperatives.
“In collaboration with Beontag, we have developed an RFID tag that meets both the economic and environmental challenges of the future, paving the way for new mobility solutions.”
“We are enormously proud to share what we have achieved so early in our partnership with Michelin,” said Suchi Srinivasan, Beontag’s global vice president of digital transformation. “As an innovation-led, problem-solving partner for our customers, we have worked hard to develop the necessary technology and durability capabilities in these RFID-enabled tires, making sure they are suited to the needs of modern vehicles and their drivers. I look forward to continuing this journey with Michelin to drive business and promote sustainability.”
