State partners with IonQ and UMD to establish Maryland as a global quantum technology hub
The State of Maryland, in partnership with the University of Maryland (UMD) and quantum computing firm IonQ, has launched an initiative that aims to position Maryland as a leading hub for quantum technologies.
The Capital of Quantum program seeks to unlock over $1 billion in investments, combining state funds, federal grants, private-sector contributions and philanthropic support over the next five years.
Subject to budget approval, IonQ plans to expand its corporate headquarters to a 100,000-square-foot facility within UMD's Discovery District. This expansion would include a data center, laboratories and office space. IonQ also intends to double its workforce in the Maryland region to at least 250 employees over the next five years.
Speaking at IonQ's headquarters in UMD's Discovery District, Gov. Wes Moore said: “Quantum has the potential to transform every part of our economy and society, from national security to health care.
“With extraordinary assets and partnerships, Maryland can—and should—lead in this newly emerging sector and we are moving forward with a clear strategy to make that vision a reality. Together, we will make Maryland the quantum capital of the world."
For its part in the initiative, UMD plans to recruit top quantum scientists to join its 200-strong faculty, expanding access to the National Quantum Laboratory (QLab) in partnership with IonQ and building new facilities for its Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security.
The university also intends to grow its Quantum Startup Foundry to support entrepreneurs and launch educational initiatives, from high school programs to workforce retraining, to prepare future leaders in the quantum field.
“Investing in quantum computing is investing in Maryland's future,” said IonQ president and CEO Peter Chapman.
“Through Gov. Moore’s strategic economic development initiative and proposed investment in quantum, he is not only supporting cutting-edge research and innovation but fostering economic growth and job creation in the state.
“The governor's commitment is a testament to his vision for the pivotal role that quantum science will play in the state’s economic development and technological leadership. This investment will also enhance our collaboration with the University of Maryland to solidify the region as a global leader in quantum innovation.”
IonQ was founded in 2015 with UMD as a startup located within the Discovery District at the University of Maryland campus and many of its employees are UMD graduates.
