Quantum software company Multiverse Computing is partnering with Quebec-based deep learning research center Mila to use quantum and quantum-inspired methods to advance AI and machine learning (ML).

The joint team will initially focus on quantum and quantum-inspired biotech and pharmaceutical industry use cases and plans to extend into other sectors later.

“We’ve already started conversations with biotech and pharma companies in addition to other sectors with which we share quantum use cases. The conversation is all about augmenting their products with our technology,” said Multiverse CEO Enrique Lizaso Olmos.

Multiverse uses tensor networks, a technology that uses quantum physics to increase the speed and precision of ML, and Mila researchers also have expertise in this area. Multiverse will also train Mila researchers in using quantum computing with ML and they will work together to use tensor networks to develop augmented ML.

“This partnership will allow some of our students and researchers to access Multiverse’s technology that is solving real-world use cases today,” said Stéphane Létourneau, Mila’s executive vice president.

The partnership will also offer Multiverse access to Mila’s network of corporate partners that work in sectors that include bio and pharma, agritech and Industry 4.0.

Both organizations say they share a commitment to ethical AI. Multiverse has an ethics committee that it says prioritizes diversity, inclusion, well-being and sustainability. And Mila employs ethical frameworks for AI, including the Montreal Declaration for a Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence and the International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of AI and Digital Technologies.
