Quantum infrastructure software company Q-CTRL has released an update to its Boulder Opal software that includes new AI capabilities.

Due to the difficulty of making AI applicable to quantum hardware, quantum technology and artificial intelligence have largely remained separate in practice despite intense theoretical interest.

Q-CTRL said it aimed to provide AI agents for R&D teams working on unlocking the potential of quantum technology in the fields of computing, sensing, and communications.

“This technological intersection has been under development at Q-CTRL for some years,” said Q-CTRL CEO and founder Michael J. Biercuk.

“Now we’re excited to make custom-engineered AI agents available to solve some of the toughest challenges faced by researchers in the quantum sector. It’s thrilling to know that Q-CTRL is the true global leader in taking this technology from promise to practical.”

Q-CTRL previously used AI in the operation and optimization of quantum hardware, demonstrating that an AI agent could communicate with a quantum computer and learn to create new "machine languages" for the device more effectively than any method created by other methods.

Q-CTRL’s current focus is helping research teams use AI to tune, calibrate and optimize experiments better and without the need for manual assistance.

Boulder Opal, the main R&D product from Q-CTRL, is a Python package used by national laboratories, prestigious universities and private-sector quantum businesses to speed up research in quantum technology with quantum control methods.

With the help of a new tool suite in Boulder Opal, users can use AI automation to speed up manual tasks, freeing up researchers' time to focus on producing the most fundamental insights necessary to make quantum technology useful.
