Canadian Partnership Targets Quantum Computing Education and Research
Xanadu and Toronto Metropolitan University aim to co-develop a quantum curriculum
August 30, 2023
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and Canadian quantum hardware and software company Xanadu are partnering to advance quantum computing education and research in Canada.
The partnership will see TMU and Xanadu develop a co-curricular quantum computing and quantum software-focused educational program. The program will give students and researchers across TMU faculties access to Xanadu's quantum hardware and software, enabling them to explore, co-create and innovate in this rapidly developing field.
"We are thrilled to partner with TMU to help build a quantum-ready workforce in Canada," said Xanadu CEO Christian Weedbrook. "This partnership will give students and researchers access to the latest quantum technologies and expertise, helping them to develop the skills they need to solve some of the world's most challenging problems."
The program is expected to launch in the fall of 2023 and will be open to students from all faculties at TMU. The program will cover a wide range of topics, including quantum mechanics, quantum algorithms and quantum programming. Students will also have the opportunity to work on real-world projects with Xanadu's experts.
The partnership is also expected to help to attract and retain top talent in Canada. Quantum computing is a rapidly growing field and there is a high demand for skilled workers. The partnership will give students and researchers at TMU the opportunity to gain the skills they need to be successful in this field.
“This partnership offers TMU students and researchers a remarkable opportunity that will shape the future leaders in the advancement of quantum computing,” said TMU vice-president, research and innovation Steven Liss. “Having access to Xanadu’s expert knowledge and state-of-the-art technology will allow TMU talent to develop and test real-world applications of quantum computing, keeping Canada at the forefront of this emerging technology.”
