Baidu’s AI Chatbot to Power Samsung’s New Smartphones
The AI chatbot, Ernie, enables capabilities including translating calls in real time, text summarization and “circle to search”
Samsung is leveraging Baidu’s AI-powered chatbot Ernie for its S24 smartphone series, offering users a range of capabilities including translating calls in real time and generating responses to users’ questions.
The new range, revealed earlier in January, is being touted by the company as “redefining” smartphones, with “advanced AI enhancements” integrated across editing software, search capabilities and messaging options.
Ernie will also be powering Samsung’s new “circle to search” feature, which allows users to search for an item by underlining or circling it and is typically handled by Alphabet’s Google in other markets.
With the integration of Ernie, the series will also be able to help customers with tasks such as text summarization, translation and organization.
Baidu launched Ernie 4.0 last October at its Baidu World conference in Beijing.
According to Baidu, the latest iteration marks the “most powerful” version of the model to date.
"Ernie 4.0 has achieved a full upgrade with drastically improved performance in understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory," said Robin Li, Baidu’s CEO. "These four core capabilities form the foundation of AI-native applications and have now unleashed unlimited opportunities for new innovations."
