Gift-Wrapping Robot Handles Holiday Packages
ABB’s autonomous robot does more than just help with warehouse tasks
Automation company ABB’s warehouse robot YuMi makes a perfect Christmas helper, with the robot’s gift-wrapping capabilities showcased by the company. Typically seen on a warehouse assembly line, YuMi can also use its two arms to fold and tape wrapping paper around parcels.
Launched in 2015 to help workers with lightweight assembly tasks, YuMi is described by ABB as “the world’s first truly collaborative robot,” with its motion design taking inspiration from human’s “ability to adapt to change” in its highly sensitive collision control that removes the need for safety barriers.
YuMi can also perform a variety of tasks including making paper airplanes, serving coffee and ice cream, and even conducting an orchestra.
“Underlying all of these fun applications is the serious message of how robots like YuMi are helping to change attitudes towards robotic automation,” said Sami Atiya, ABB president of robotics and discrete automation. “In helping to educate people about how robots can support our work, YuMi has paved the way for robots to be used in workplaces and factory floors worldwide.”
