While it's virtually impossible to pinpoint the one individual area where the IoT is going to be most transformational, transportation and mobility is undoubtedly a front runner, with cars, planes, cities and public transportation systems all eagerly anticipating IoT integration.

For instance:

  • The annual cost of U.S. traffic congestion — $160 billion — could be significantly cut down by the introduction of autonomous cars, mass ride-sharing and smart public transport.

  • The 216 hours a year the average American spends commuting will also be better spent on work or play, thanks to the same factors.

  • All three will also play a huge role enhancing mobility for disabled citizens in urban and rural areas.

• Parking spaces are eating our cities alive — better public transport and more popular ride-sharing options will reduce the need for parking spaces in urban settings.

  • The petabyte of data produced every week by commercial aircrafts is sitting data just waiting to be analysed — this insight stands to make for shorter, more reliable and less stressful flights.

When Internet of Things World speakers ZipCar, Lyft, Grab and the Prime Minister's Office of Singapore took the stage to discuss the potential of the sharing economy at CES 2017, each panellist drew from their extensive experience of the sharing economy, and combined to offer a wide range of insight into the development this economy from public and private sector perspectives.

They determined that public-private partnerships would be key — the upshot could be “100% shared mobility for entire populations” across countries internationally.

From mass ride-sharing via the sharing economy, to translating petabytes of airplane data into actionable insights, discover how the internet of things will transform mobility forever, at Internet of Things World 2017.
