CES 2025 Ushers in a New Era for Quantum Computing
CES celebrates the U.N.’s International Year of Quantum Science and Technology
While AI-enabled applications and gadgets are poised to dominate headlines once again at CES 2025, quantum computing is quietly stepping into the spotlight, ready to supercharge the next wave of technological innovation.
Quantum technology, once confined to academic and research laboratories, has now emerged as a transformative force, driving advancements across major industries and scientific fields. With milestones such as Google’s Willow announcement and a rapid succession of developments pushing quantum computing closer to real-world applications, the field is gaining significant momentum.
Despite these strides, quantum computing remains far from the consumer-oriented technologies typically showcased at CES. However, this year’s event marks a pivotal moment for quantum, with its strongest presence yet.
Quantum Track
To commemorate 2025 as the United Nations’ International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), CES 2025 is dedicating a half-day track to quantum computing on Thursday, Jan. 9.
The Quantum Means Business program is an extension of the Quantum World Congress — a global conference aimed at fostering collaboration across the quantum ecosystem to accelerate commercialization and adoption. It features three sessions:
Quantum Computing Is Here: Showcasing advancements in computing and real-world applications.
Global Industry Challenge: Celebrating the International Year of Quantum and exploring its impact.
Quantum Is Now: Highlighting breakthroughs in precision and sensitivity enabled by quantum technology.
Speakers will represent leading organizations, including Microsoft, Quantinuum, IBM, IonQ, the American Physical Society, the IYQ executive committee and the Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C).
Quantum Showcases and Milestones
Several prominent quantum computing companies and organizations are set to showcase their latest innovations at CES 2025:
Multiverse Computing: The quantum AI software company recently leveraged quantum techniques to enhance data privacy and fraud detection solutions. It also secured a contract with Airbus Defence and Space to develop a gesture-based control system for fighter jets using AI and quantum-inspired technology.
Quantinuum: In partnership with Mitsui, Quantinuum demonstrated the first successful delivery of quantum tokens over a six-mile fiber-optic network in Japan last November. The company also unveiled an ambitious roadmap to achieve universal, fault-tolerant quantum computing by 2030.
Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C): A global consortium of quantum companies, research institutions and government agencies, QED-C has been raising awareness about the potential threat quantum technology poses to secure financial sector data.
Multiverse Computing co-founder and CEO Enrique Lizaso said: "At CES we are showcasing the true value of quantum technology with our AI model compressor, CompactifAI. Leveraging our expertise in quantum, we provide customers with pre-compressed AI models, enabling cost efficiency and lower energy consumption. This approach accelerates AI adoption with quantum-based technology."
A New Era of Quantum Innovation
As CES 2025 sets the stage for quantum technology’s most prominent showing yet, the event highlights the growing significance of quantum computing as a driver of future innovation. While it may not yet be ready for consumer markets, its transformative potential across industries underscores its role as a critical enabler of next-generation technologies. For those attending, the quantum track offers a rare opportunity to glimpse the future of computing and its profound implications for the world.
