7-Eleven convenience stores in Japan are getting AI-based vision systems to improve in-store advertising.

The project is being conducted by Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) and will see the company’s edge AI-driven vision detection solution introduced at 500 convenience store locations in Japan.

The tool uses on-sensor AI to detect when a customer sees digital signage, counting how many people stop to look at the advert and how long they spend looking at it. The placement and content of these adverts are then adapted based on this information to increase the reach and impact of in-store advertising.

SSS noted that the system “does not output image data capable of identifying individuals”, working to ensure privacy and anonymity while collecting in-store information.

SSS’s edge AI-sensing platform AITRIOS is used to build and operate the in-store solution. The company said the platform “delivers a complete service without the need for third-party tools, enabling simple, sustainable operations.”
